13-year-old Aditi Muthukumar from Westminster will represent Colorado at the National Spelling Bee. Aditi Muthukumar and seven other top spellers advanced to the next round on Wednesday. They will compete for the Scripps Cup to reach the finals of the National Spelling Bee.
Muthukumar, an 8th grader at Hulstrom K-8 in Northglenn, has shown a strategic and dedicated approach to spelling. Last year, she took it very seriously, and this year, she even spent more time studying words before the bee. Her words reflect her commitment: “I had more of a trajectory.” She said, “I knew where I was going with some of my study resources”.
Aditi Muthukuamar secured her place in the finals by spelling the word “myrmecoxene”, which means “an insect living in the nest of another insect that is fed and guarded for its secretions, which are used as food”.
Muthukumar will compete on Ion TV in Thursday’s final at 6 p.m. MT for the trophy and a $5,000 prize. Until then, she plans to relax, saying, “I’ve worked really hard this past year, especially these last few months, so it’s nice to have some time to rest.”
On Tuesday’s third round, 11-year-old Cooper Edwards from Boulder Valley School District misspelled a word and was eliminated. Muthukumar and Edwards were 2 of the 245 competitors in this year’s bee.
