Zaila Avant-garde is the first African American to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition. She won the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition in the year of 2021 amid the ongoing COVID-19 virus.
Zaia Avant is also the first Black Person to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition. She is not only excellent at spelling but also holds various world basketball records, including the Guinness World Record for dribbling multiple basketballs at a time.
Zaila Avant-garde was 14 years old and was from New Orleans, Louisiana, when she won the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition. The finals were held at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, U.S.
She won the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition by spelling the Victory word “Murraya”, which means “a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees (family Rutaceae) having pinnate leaves and flowers with imbricated petals; see orange jessamine.”
After she won the Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition, Zaila Avant-garde filmed a commercial for a cruise line and schooled the basketball stars Shaquille O’Neal, Dwyane Wade, and Candace Parker on spelling, dribbling, and math during an appearance on Television on TNT.
Zaila Avant-garde was also offered a job teaching the kids of Shaquille O’Neal after the basketball player witnessed how fast she multiplied the 27 and 92 in her head in a few seconds. He said, “I’ll pay you whatever it is you want to be paid.” Now, Zaila Avant-garde has been focusing on improving her basketball skills and is passionate about basketball.
Garde has been playing as a point guard with the Germantown Lady Panthers, a team within the Amateur Athletic Union. She is confident that she won’t need the money for college. She says she is anticipating a basketball scholarship.
